Fiji Ports has invested and implemented a Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) in the Suva Harbour, becoming the first in the South Pacific region. The implementation of this system is a significant step towards modernizing and being a Smart Port, as it will help enhance navigational safety and efficiency in maritime traffic.
The benefits of the VTMS, including real-time monitoring of vessel movements, route optimization, collision avoidance, emergency response, compliance monitoring and environmental protection, will provide a wide range of advantages to Fiji Ports. The system enables the operator to manage vessel traffic, monitor the harbor basin, and support border control and other requirements of key stakeholders, such as customs and immigration.
The implementation of the VTMS in the Port of Suva ensures effective monitoring and tracking of vessel movement, identifying security breaches and risk, and ensuring vessels are charged effectively and correctly for the services rendered. The system also provides better visibility of vessels entering Fiji’s port boundaries and aid Fiji Ports’ operations team with better management of vessel movements, increasing operational efficiency, and capturing vessel movement data allowing for better planning and management of port operations.
Fiji is leading the way in the Pacific Island nations by implementing an integrated turnkey Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) solution that provides the Port of Suva with the latest generation VTS features and functionality. There are plans to implement the system in Lautoka Port, which will further enhance Fiji’s maritime traffic management capabilities and promote safety and efficiency in port operations.
The implementation of a VTMS by Fiji Ports is a significant step towards modernizing and enhancing navigational safety and efficiency in maritime traffic within the South Pacific region, and it is a notable example of the benefits that advanced technology can bring to port operations.
